Family Fun in the Sun: Kid-Friendly Activities in Santa Barbara

I can tell you that Santa Barbara is bursting with fun activities for kids! Whether you’re a resident or just visiting, there’s no shortage of adventures waiting for you and your family. Here are some of our favorite spots that never fail to entertain the little ones!

Santa Barbara Zoo

One of our absolute favorites is the Santa Barbara Zoo! It’s not too big, so we can easily explore without feeling overwhelmed. The kids love watching the giraffes and getting up close with the goats at the petting zoo. Plus, the views from the zoo are just stunning—who wouldn’t love seeing the mountains and ocean while checking out the animals? Definitely check their schedule for any special events - Boo at the Zoo! Zoo Lights!

Stearns Wharf

Next, we love heading to Stearns Wharf. The kids can explore the Sea Center, where they get to touch starfish and learn about marine life. We often grab ice cream from one of the shops and stroll along the pier, soaking in the ocean breeze. It’s also a great spot for spotting dolphins, and watching fisherman catch stingrays and crab!

Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History

On days when we want a little education mixed with fun, we visit the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. The kids are always amazed by the dinosaur skeletons, and they love the interactive exhibits in the Nature Lab. It’s a great way to spark their curiosity while having a blast!

Chase Palm Park

When it’s time to let off some energy, we head to Chase Palm Park. The playground here is fantastic, and in the Summer time they play host to our favorite community event -- Thursday Night Concerts in the Park.

Campus Point

For a classic beach day, that features baby waves for the kids, this is our go-to. The calm waters are perfect for the kids, and the long beach break makes the whole family feel like they can take on the surf. Bring a picnic while watching the kids play, and if youre feeling adventurous head over to Devereau Point for the best tide-pooling on the Santa Barbara coastline.

Santa Barbara Public Library

If we need a break from the outdoors, the Santa Barbara Public Library is a cozy place to spend some time. They have tons of children’s books and often host storytime sessions that the kids really enjoy. It’s a nice way to encourage their love for reading in a relaxed setting.

Santa Barbara Bowl

For some family-friendly entertainment, we keep an eye on the schedule at the Santa Barbara Bowl. They often have concerts that cater to families, and we love bringing a blanket and enjoying live music under the stars. It’s a magical way to spend an evening together!

Outdoor Adventures

If you’re up for a little hiking, we love exploring the trails around Santa Barbara. The Mission Canyon Trail is an easy hike with beautiful views, making it perfect for families. And for those looking for a bigger adventure, La Cumbre Peak is a fun challenge for older kids!

Lotusland

A visit to Lotusland is always a treat. The gardens are absolutely breathtaking, and it’s a peaceful place to explore. The kids love the unique plants, and it’s a fantastic way to teach them about nature in a beautiful setting.

The Funk Zone

Don’t forget about the Funk Zone! It’s a great spot for families to explore colorful murals and quirky shops. Sometimes we pop into Mollusk Surf Shop to check out the latest gear. It’s fun to soak in the local culture while strolling around.

Santa Barbara Surf School

If your kids are looking for some thrills, the Santa Barbara Surf School is a must! They offer lessons for all ages, and it’s such a fun way to introduce the kids to surfing. Watching them catch their first wave is priceless!

Santa Barbara Maritime Museum

The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum is perfect for families who love the ocean. With exhibits on local maritime history and hands-on activities, it’s both educational and entertaining. Go on a Saturday while the Fisherman's Market is happening (8a-12p) so they can see the lobsters, sea urchin and delicious fish hauled onto shore by our amazing local fishermen.

Bike Rentals

We often rent bikes and explore Santa Barbara’s scenic paths. Wheel Fun Rentals has a variety of options, including family-friendly bikes. It’s a great way to enjoy the beautiful scenery while getting some exercise together.

Butterfly Beach

Butterfly Beach is another family favorite. It’s usually less crowded, which is great for letting the kids roam free. We often bring kites to fly or just relax while they dig in the sand.

Carpinteria Seal Sanctuary

A short drive from Santa Barbara, the Carpinteria Seal Sanctuary is always a hit! Watching the seals in their natural habitat is such a cool experience for the kids, and it’s a perfect way to learn about wildlife conservation.

MOXI, The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation

Last but not least, we love visiting MOXI! This interactive science museum is perfect for kids of all ages. With hands-on exhibits and experiments, it’s a great place for the kids to explore and discover new things.

Santa Barbara is such a fantastic place for families, and these activities keep us busy and happy together. So grab the kids, head out, and create some wonderful memories in our beautiful city!
